Doe a Deer

On the day of the Christmas Fair the Year 5 children enjoyed a workshop with Manchester based willow artist Cherry Chung.  Cherry had been invited in to school to work with the children to produce a finished sculpture and befitting the season the proposed sculpture was to be of a deer.

Cherry began the day by presenting a powerpoint of her work to the Junior School in assembly. The children were very impressed with the creations that Cherry had made and responded enthusiastically asking many questions.

The Year 5s worked in small groups throughout the day on the sculpture. Cherry showed them examples of her work and explained how the willow was to be manipulated and woven to produce the deer sculpture. The children were eager to contribute and were excited to see the deer’s form taking place. The deer started to take on its’ own personality and the children discussed possible names.

By the end of the day and after some final adjustments by Cherry the deer was finished.

The sculpture is currently on display in the corridor leading to the dance studio from the main reception area.
